This is a video of Gene Kelly dancing in Summer Stock (Charles Walter, 1950) by none other than MGM. In case you’re wondering why I love film, it’s because of moments like this clip. A newspaper and a squeaky floorboard can make anyone a star and non-diegetic music is always there to accompany you. There’s something pure genius about this solo dance – one that shows off the tapping talent of an individual (rather than the large group numbers that relied on grandeur scale). In my opinion, this is the height of the musical in the Hollywood Studio System.
